This isn't just another catcher. This guy can hit, and he's young. Platoon him with Yorvit, and we will have a nice little combo. The guy hit .324 vs. righthanders last year.
No real point in platooning him. He's young and proven...won't need much rest or bench time. Plus, if the Giants expect to sign him long-term at some point, the last thing they want to do is piss him off by benching him. AJ is a fireball and wants constant playing time. He played something like 30 games injured last year because he refused to be taken out of the line up.
I feel bad for Yorvit, he put so much effort into grooming to be our future and right now it looks like his only chance, if he wants substantial playing time, is to be traded. Never even got a real shot to prove himself. :/
I don't know if I understand this move, 'cause as someone else said, there are other more pertinent positions we need filled...HOWEVER, AJ Pierzynski is AJ Pierzysnki. He's an all star and one of the most talented catchers in the game. Ain't gonna catch me complaining.
Yeah, it could definitely be the first step in some sort of Brian-Sabean-Master-Plan. Yorvit is valuable trade bait now and should garner a good package. Whether or not it's a Sexson shaped packaged, remains to be seen...;)
Catcher was a definite need. Yorvit was good, but not superstar material. He'd be a great trade bait (solid, young, resourceful). Castillo was old, but nonexistent. Yay for AJ.
I don't know. I like Pierzynski as much as anyone, but I think Torrealba would've been a perfectly good catcher. And they gave up way too much. Without Joe Nathan, the bullpen will be really, really thin if Worrell leaves and Nen doesn't return to pre-injury form. Plus, both of the minor leaguers they gave up were good prospects. Liriano has had a lot of injury problems, but he also has a lot of potential, and Bonser was one of the best young arms in the system.
Lets not forget that we still have Rodriguez and Herges in there, Super Joe is a loss and Torrealba would have been a good fit behind the plate, but AJ is an all star and you just can't pass that up
A platoon is when you have two players sharing time at a position - usually one who hits righthanded and plays against lefthanded pitchers, and one who his lefthanded against righthanded pitchers.
The Giants did this to some extent last year with J.T. Snow and Andres Galarraga, and more extensively with Bill Mueller and Mark Lewis back in, er, think it was 1996.

Re: Well..
True. And Pierzynski is a couple years younger than I realized. I don't have anything against trading for him - I'm just afraid they gave up too much.November 14 2003, 22:17:54 UTC 8 years ago
